Capitalism and the Campus – Coming to WMOX 6/16/11

On Thursday June 16 during the 8:20 am cdt segment John Allison will join us on The Morning Show. John is currently Distinguished Professor of Practice in the business school at Wake Forest University. Prior to joining the faculty, he was the Chairman of BBT from 1988 to 2009. Under his leadership, BBT grew from a very small bank in NC to one of the largest banks in the country. More importantly, did it the right way and were able to emerge from the financial crisis unscathed. (John’s bio)
At Wake Forest he is spreading the word about the power of capitalism and free markets on the campus. John passionately make the case that capitalism is not only the most efficient way to organize economic activity, but is morally justified since it respects and encourages the contributions and freedoms of the individual. One of works which has shaped John’s worldview is Ayn Rand’s classic Atlas Shrugged (early posts on it). In fact, while at BBT it was required reading for his senior management team. During John’s time with us we will discuss the importance of teaching capitalism and the impact of Atlas Shrugged. Hopefully, we will have time to get into the financial crisis since John has in depth knowledge on how the industry really works.

It’s called Freedom Jamboree and it’s going to be a huge event!
Planners are expecting over a million guests, as well as all of the conservative candidates for President of the United States. Local tea party and 912 groups from all over the country are participating and selecting their delegates to vote in the straw poll to select the frontrunner for the next President Of The United States!
Admission is free to everyone but there is a fee for tea party groups to register a delegate to vote in the straw poll.

Hope and Change Sticky Notes Coming To A Pump Near You Soon!
I’ve heard the low rumblings of a movement afoot within the Tea Party to start raising awareness of the failures and frankly the terrible successes of our President and his Administration. It is gaining some traction and it seems like an awesome idea.
It’s called The Sticky Note Campaign and though it started as an idea to present Conservative messages across the country at individual gas pumps is now expanding into grocery and retail stores such as these in Georgia. There are even photos of them posted in bathrooms and elevators!
The idea is absolute genius, low cost, non-destructive and really simple to do.
Here’s how:
- Get a large stack of yellow sticky notes
- Get a magic marker
- Get a roll of transparent tape (use only if necessary)
- Write short messages on the notes
- Post the notes on gas pumps whenever you buy gas
- Post the notes where ever, when ever you find higher prices

A Facebook page has been setup to share photos and info for this grassroots activist campaign. Be sure to take photos of your notes and post them to your own Facebook page for your friends and relatives to see as well. That way, the notes can do double duty!
Here’s a couple of things to remember:
Do not write vulgar, racist or inappropriate messages on the notes. Do not put the notes where they will impede the use of any equipment or prevent a person from reading any necessary safety information or digital readouts. We are not union activists, so don’t confront anyone or seek to be disruptive in any way.
The Sticky Note Campaign is about having some fun and getting a message out to all those who are paying more for everything.

In conversations with lots of people, I’ve found a percentage of people who are aware of the book “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand, but a much larger percentage of people know nothing about this book, its implications nor its impact some 50 years after it was written. In January, 2010, John Stossel focused on this book and explained a great deal about why the book continues to be a best-seller so long after its original publication.
March Madness: U.S. Gov’t Spent More Than Eight Times Its Monthly Revenue

(CNSNews.com) – The U.S. Treasury has released a final statement for the month of March that demonstrates that financial madness has gripped the federal government.
During the month, according to the Treasury, the federal government grossed $194 billion in tax revenue and paid out $65.898 billion in tax refunds (including $62.011 to individuals and $3.887 to businesses) thus netting $128.179 billion in tax revenue for March.
At the same time, the Treasury paid out a total of $1.1187 trillion. When the $65.898 billion in tax refunds is deducted from that, the Treasury paid a net of $1.0528 trillion in federal expenses for March. That $1.0528 trillion in spending for March equaled 8.2 times the $128.179 [billion] in net federal tax revenue for the month.
Harry Reid can try to point his crooked little finger at Tea Party people all he wants, but the facts are that the United States should not and cannot sustain this level of irresponsibility on the part of its leaders, Democrat OR Republican.
The folks at the Heritage Foundation put together this great video, We Still Hold These Truths. It very well done and inspirational. No doubt folks in the Tea Party will watch and say this is why I believe what I do. The narrator Matt Spalding has been on WMOX for our on-going series, The Heritage Hour, a couple of times and is really good. He also has book by the same name.

In a country, headed toward socialism, where the elitist few ran the government and did not govern for the people, but against them…
In a climate of arrogant words, never before seen flippant attitudes, photo ops, fake news stories, and continued out of control rhetoric…
We listen to all the rhetoric. We witness the negative campaigning. Through it all, hopefully, we will find reality.
Tuesday’s elections will undoubtedly see substantial gains for Republicans. This alone is no cure for our present problems.
Besides the detrimental socialist legislations by our liberal Congress, we have other more deeply rooted problems. Corruption abounds on both sides of the aisle. Ethics, integrity and honesty are at a low point. Cronyism, PACs and lobbyist efforts have far too much influence in Washington.
James P. Gannon recently wrote a piece for The American Spectator that simply is a must read.
One of the most striking things about this year’s political discourse (as if name-calling and wild accusations can be dignified with such a term) is that what used to be considered traditional and commonplace thinking is now labeled as extremism and bigotry. A few examples:
If you believe that the U.S. Constitution means only what it actually says, you are an extremist who ought to be wearing a powdered wig.
If you believe that marriage is exclusively the union of one man and one woman, you are a homophobe and a bigot.
If you think people should not be allowed to break into our country illegally, then get free education, health care and jobs and to march in our streets to protest the violation of their “rights,” you are a racist, a xenophobe, and your state should be boycotted.
It is glaringly evident the modern day NAACP has abandoned the vision and dream of the Civil Rights Movements of years ago to join the liberal ‘fear mongering’ horde of politicians suddenly ‘running scared’. Dr. King would be appalled.
In doing so, they shamelessly betray blacks by trying to convince them they are victims in America based on race. This graphically identifies the NAACP as the ones who are truly ‘racists’ and not the Tea Parties they are trying to disparage. The NAACP’s so-called documented report that the tea parties are racist is part of their desperate, panic appeal to get out the vote campaign. With only two weeks remaining before the predicted democrat debacle at the polls, democrats are frantically attempting to fire up their lethargic base since their appeal is sagging.
