Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker successfully passed legislation last year that put a few restraints on out-of-control public sector unions, despite their disgraceful Astroturf occupation of the State capital building, the death threats and everything else they tried. So the unions launched a recall petition against Walker, the Lt. Governor and four Republican Senators who voted with him.

The unions mobilized and garnered 1 million signatures for the recall, much more than enough. But now it appears that they used the ACORN vote registration fraud method of swamping state authorities with bogus documents. Some of these petitions are plainly fraudulent (Donald Duck for example) but Wisconsin’s Government Accountability Board, the state agency charged with counting petitions, has said they can do no more than spot check and will assume all petitions are valid unless challenged.

Recognizing the importance of this recall and the potential threat to reform everywhere, True the Vote stepped in to do the job the State will not. TTV has created a simple system to check the validity of these petitions but they need to enter them into the system first. They only have until February 27th to get this done!

Anyone, anywhere with access to a computer can help. This is a real opportunity to have a visible impact on the outcome of one of the most important issues we face today. If Scott Walker loses they will start doing this all over the country anytime they don’t get what they want!

John is currently Distinguished Professor of Practice in the business school at Wake Forest University. Prior to joining the faculty, he was the Chairman of BBT from 1988 to 2009. Under his leadership, BBT grew from a very small bank in NC to one of the largest banks in the country. More importantly, did it the right way and were able to emerge from the financial crisis unscathed. (John’s bio)

At Wake Forest he is spreading the word about the power of capitalism and free markets on the campus. John passionately make the case that capitalism is not only the most efficient way to organize economic activity, but is morally justified since it respects and encourages the contributions and freedoms of the individual. One of works which has shaped John’s worldview is Ayn Rand’s classic Atlas Shrugged (early posts on it). In fact, while at BBT it was required reading for his senior management team. (Here are couple articles on him activites from Reuters and The New York Times)

During John’s time with us we will discuss the importance of teaching capitalism and the impact of Atlas Shrugged. Hopefully, we will have time to get into the financial crisis since John has in depth knowledge on how the industry really works.

To wet your appetite for the discussion, check out this segment on CNBC recently. Be sure to tune in to WMOX, 1010 AM in Meridian. If outside the area you can listen on WMOX’s streaming video link on my website.

Here on this Memorial Day 2011 when we pay homage to all those who served but especially to those who made ‘the ultimate sacrifice’ I wanted to pass on one thought.

In our society, notably since the end of the Vietnam conflict and the termination of the Selective Service Draft, there are many who have never served. That they never served is ‘their loss’. Other than the distorted vision they have formed from many movies, they truly have no concept about military life and the commitment of those who serve. I have met many who oppose the military and all possible reasons by which we place our young people and their leaders in “harm’s way”. They have a right to their opinion but, in my estimation, they are completely wrong.

Today I want to simply note a statement by the reknowned British philosopher John Stuart Mill:

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. A man who has nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”

No truer words have ever been said.

God Bless all who serve.

Our country is a better place because of them.

In the course of my daily review of favorite news sources, I ran across a video that caught my attention. It was a video of a guy asking students if they would sign a “petition” that was aimed at banning conservatives from talk radio and tv. The petitioner explicitly mentioned Beck and Limbaugh in his presentation to each person and the camera recorded their reactions. During the course of each encounter, the person signing the petition was asked if they supported free speech. You can watch the results below for yourself.

Editor’s Note: The video contains some foul language and may be offensive to some viewers.

Click here to view the embedded video.

After watching this video, I decided to investigate the source of the video and that led me to a website called ExposingLeftists.com which had very interesting and potentially blood pressure raising videos. Like the one below which shows a petitioner asking students whether they would sign a pledge to pay their share of the $14 Trillion debt our nation has incurred. Like the previous video the answers these supposedly educated students gave are surprising at best and hypocritical at worst.

Editor’s Note: The video contains some foul language and may be offensive to some viewers.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The website ExposingLeftists.com was created by three college students (Oliver Darcy, Michael Fincher, and Maurice Lewis) who started recording videos like this to show the hypocrisies of liberals on college campuses. After some of their videos were posted on conservative sites like TheBlaze.com, DailyCaller.com, Breitbart.tv, TheDailyBeast.com, and the Economist online and became highly popular, the three students decided to created ExposingLeftists.com as a forum to continue showing the inconsistencies and failures of liberal students and faculty.

Finally, my favorite video of all is the following one where the petitioner asks students if they would be willing to allow their “excess” GPA points to be taken from them and given to students who have lower GPA’s. Care to guess how the students answered this question?

Sometimes there are news stories that are deliciously ironic. For example, every time I read a news story of a robbery where the robber gets trapped inside the store and has to be freed by the police just before they take him into custody, my sense of irony is watered and refreshed.

But sometimes a story skips the irony stage and moves directly to idiocy. Such is the case of the story of recent comments made by Omar Bin Laden about the death of his father. Here’s a bit:

LONDON (Reuters) – A statement purporting to come from a son of Osama bin Laden denounced the al Qaeda leader’s killing as “criminal” and said his burial at sea had humiliated the family, an online monitoring service said.

The statement, attributed to Omar bin Laden, bin Laden’s fourth eldest son, said the al Qaeda chief’s children reserved the right to take legal action in the United States and internationally to “determine the true fate of our vanished father,” the SITE Intelligence Group said.

There was no independent confirmation of the authenticity of the letter, published on the website of Islamist ideologue Abu Walid al-Masri, although several specialists on militant propaganda said the text appeared genuine. [...]

[...] The letter said, in part: “We hold the American President (Barack) Obama legally responsible to clarify the fate of our father, Osama bin Laden, for it is unacceptable, humanely and religiously, to dispose of a person with such importance and status among his people, by throwing his body into the sea in that way, which demeans and humiliates his family and his supporters and which challenges religious provisions and feelings of hundreds of millions of Muslims.”

[ Read The Rest ]

Do I really have to point out the fact that I find it “unacceptable, humanely and religiously” to dispose of over 3,000 innocent American citizens by flying large planes into skyscrapers? Do I really have to point out the fact that Omar is just lucky that he wasn’t in the compound that night or they would have been dumping his body into the sea at the same time? Do I really have to point out the fact that every time a terrorist gets what’s coming to him, he or his family go running to the press to cry about how unfair the world is? Do I have really have to point out that any lawyer who decides to take on old Omar as a client to sue the United States over this will have earned any bad karma that comes his way?

Do I really have to point out that I really don’t give a crap about his misery and his loss?

Note to Omar: Your daddy did something that came with consequences and finally your daddy had to pay those consequences. Call it what you will, but sadly, Omar, your daddy is the one to blame here. Your daddy could have been a teacher, preacher, plumber, baker, or a candle-stick maker; but instead, he chose to be a terrorist and he chose to kill over 3,000 of our people to make a political statement.

The truth is this: The person you should be angry with is your daddy. He made the decisions that led to his own destruction. Around here, we call it personal responsibility. If your daddy had made different choices and lived like a man of character then perhaps he would have been given the opportunity to die like a man of character.

You should exceed your daddy’s expectations and choose to live like a man instead of like a terrorist. As your daddy found out, if you choose wrong, then the next knock at your door may be Seal Team 6.

I’ve heard the low rumblings of a movement afoot within the Tea Party to start raising awareness of the failures and frankly the terrible successes of our President and his Administration. It is gaining some traction and it seems like an awesome idea.

It’s called The Sticky Note Campaign and though it started as an idea to present Conservative messages across the country at individual gas pumps is now expanding into grocery and retail stores such as these in Georgia. There are even photos of them posted in bathrooms and elevators!

The idea is absolute genius, low cost, non-destructive and really simple to do.

Here’s how:

Get a large stack of yellow sticky notes

Get a magic marker

Get a roll of transparent tape (use only if necessary)

Write short messages on the notes

Post the notes on gas pumps whenever you buy gas

Post the notes where ever, when ever you find higher prices

Here’s some of the best Sticky Note messages we’ve seen so far:

How’s that Hopey Changey Thing Working For You? NOBAMA 2012

Full Of Hope & Change With An Empty Tank! NOBAMA 2012

Hope & Change At Work Here! High Prices – Thanks Obama.

You’re Fired – NOBAMA 2012

We cannot afford another four years of Obama

OBAMA-NOMICS: The “change” I have left after paying other people’s bills.

Higher Energy Prices – Thanks Obama – NOBAMA 2012

Like These Prices? NOBAMA 2012

Does Hope & Change Leave You Feeling Empty? NOBAMA 2012

NOBAMA – Let’s not find out how much worse it could be.

A Facebook page has been setup to share photos and info for this grassroots activist campaign. Be sure to take photos of your notes and post them to your own Facebook page for your friends and relatives to see as well. That way, the notes can do double duty!

Here’s a couple of things to remember:

Do not write vulgar, racist or inappropriate messages on the notes. Do not put the notes where they will impede the use of any equipment or prevent a person from reading any necessary safety information or digital readouts. We are not union activists, so don’t confront anyone or seek to be disruptive in any way.

The Sticky Note Campaign is about having some fun and getting a message out to all those who are paying more for everything.

If you have some good ideas for messages or some pictures to send us, let us know.

In conversations with lots of people, I’ve found a percentage of people who are aware of the book “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand, but a much larger percentage of people know nothing about this book, its implications nor its impact some 50 years after it was written. In January, 2010, John Stossel focused on this book and explained a great deal about why the book continues to be a best-seller so long after its original publication.

I thought it might be helpful to people to understand why this book and this movie are important to our times.

Terence P. Jeffrey posted a story at CNSNews.com that just made my jaw drop.

(CNSNews.com) – The U.S. Treasury has released a final statement for the month of March that demonstrates that financial madness has gripped the federal government.

During the month, according to the Treasury, the federal government grossed $194 billion in tax revenue and paid out $65.898 billion in tax refunds (including $62.011 to individuals and $3.887 to businesses) thus netting $128.179 billion in tax revenue for March.

At the same time, the Treasury paid out a total of $1.1187 trillion. When the $65.898 billion in tax refunds is deducted from that, the Treasury paid a net of $1.0528 trillion in federal expenses for March. That $1.0528 trillion in spending for March equaled 8.2 times the $128.179 [billion] in net federal tax revenue for the month.

Harry Reid can try to point his crooked little finger at Tea Party people all he wants, but the facts are that the United States should not and cannot sustain this level of irresponsibility on the part of its leaders, Democrat OR Republican.

A business spending 8 times its revenue in single month might raise some eyebrows especially if the expenditures aren’t for capital improvements. But the problem is that this isn’t a one-time overspending with extraordinary circumstances. This is the norm for our Federal Government. This spending spree has been going on a long time, but it accelerated once Pelosi took over the House Leadership more than four years ago.

Our Country is bleeding red ink. Tea Party members have been screaming that we cannot sustain this lifestyle. As individuals we know that if we spend more than we make for an extended period of time, the debt crushes our households, devastates our families and endangers our children. Financial woes are the biggest cause of divorces in our Country. The children of such divorces are the ultimate losers since strained financial resources are split even further. The same is true at the Federal Level. Our children and their children’s children will be the ultimate losers if we don’t stand up, take responsibility and pay our debts.

In all my years of watching politics, I’ve never seen the arguing and verbal abuse that is taking place between supposedly good people. Why are Harry Reid and Charles Schumer so hell-bent on making our financial situation about the Tea Party? Are they falling into the same old cliche of killing the messenger? Or, are they looking to divert attention from their mis-management? Is it time to start some long deserved investigations into these and other Congressmen and Senators? This situation is reaching a point where in business someone would go to jail for this kind of abuse of power. Bernie Madoff is starting to look like a piker at this point.

From the beginning a cornerstone of the Tea Party Movement has been a focus on the lack of Fiscal Responsibility on the part of our elected officials.

Ronald Reagan once said:

“We could say [Democrats] spend money like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors. It would be unfair, because the sailors are spending their own money.”

However, there’s another difference between sailors and Democrats/Liberals: When sailors run out of their own money they quit drinking, head back to the ship, sober up and go back to work. But Democrats aren’t spending their own money, we’ve basically given them an open bar with no tab and they have no intention of stopping until the party is shut down by the police.

The message the Tea Party has been promoting from the very beginning has been that we cannot continue to spend our resources without regard to the future. For over two years, we have argued against unreasonable and unjustifiable expenditures. We worked hard in the last election to make our voices heard and now our elected officials wonder in fake surprise and dismay as to how we could possibly be upset over these little, old Continuing Resolutions or how we could ever be upset over raising the debt ceiling just a little bit.

Do They Not Get It?

Can elected officials really be that stupid?

I suggest that the Tea Party Movement consider adopting a new message:

Shut it down. Shut It Down NOW!

Originally posted at examiner.com

As the battle of the budget wages on, and the March 4th D-Day moves inexorably closer, and with the Continuing Resolution passed in the House of Representatives early this morning, including two amendments by Rep. Steve King (R-IA) to defund Obamacare, the media is increasingly raising the specter of a possible government shutdown. What every Republican, every patriot, every person conceivably affected needs to understand is how this will impact average Americans.

Will airports shut down because air traffic controllers have gone on leave? Will those mean Republicans throw granny out in the street when Social Security stops sending payments? Will everyone who receives checks in the mail see their income dry up because the Post Office shuts down?

Will welfare mothers have to feed their children cat food?

The Democrats will tell you that and more. A Google search of “government shutdown” brings up pages describing dire consequences. But if you follow the links you will see that this is more a reflection of leftist web domination than anything else.

The greatest consequence of a government shutdown will be the Democrat-generated media hysteria we will have to put up with unless/until they get their way. They will demagogue at every opportunity, describing fantastic scenes of nationwide anarchy. They will do what they always do, about the only thing they do well, and in fact have already begun doing:

They will lie.

President Obama almost immediately threatened that Social Security checks would stop coming.

He lied.

Think Progress, the archetypical radical left propaganda rag, interviewed freshman Republican Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), who pooh poohed worries about a government shutdown. They didn’t ask him to qualify, but later attempted to discredit his message:

Kelly’s assertions are simply not true. One need look no further than the federal government shutdown of 1995 for proof. During the nearly four-week shutdown, Social Security checks were not mailed and Medicare/Medicaid reimbursements were disrupted.

They lie.

The whole article is a carefully constructed deception—an echo chamber for Democrat demagoguery. Follow the links. They’re hoping you won’t.

The first link goes to a Wikipedia entry that describes the 1995 shutdown. No mention of social security checks. The second goes to an article at Talking Points Memo, the hard left smear site. It simply quotes more Democrats, like Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Reich and Donna Shalala, then HHS Secretary. She said, “It was a mess, frankly, and devastating to the civil service… It seems to me it’s un-American…”

Devastating to the civil service…

I find that telling. Her biggest concern is the impact on… government. And what a joke. We are talking about two shutdowns here, one of five days and another of three weeks—merely a long vacation for most government bureaucrats.

Un-American? Well, she should know.

According to TPM, Shalala provided a list of payments that would stop: “Social Security checks, Medicare reimbursements…welfare checks to the state, Medicaid checks to the state.”

She lied.

Think Progress even absurdly cites a report by the Center for American Progress. The Center is run by far, far left, former Clinton Chief of Staff John Podesta, and described by former Weather Underground Obama supporter Mark Rudd as “Obama’s government in waiting.” Yet another echo chamber.

The Think Progress article then cites some statistics from a 2004 Congressional Research Service report on government shutdowns, implying that the CRS concurred regarding all these ill effects of the shutdown.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The Congressional Research Service is one of the few remaining organizations within the U.S. government that produces serious, unbiased analysis. Part of the Library of Congress, it is the go to organization when members of Congress want the unvarnished truth. By citing CRS, Think Progress attempts to impute integrity to their fraudulent propaganda. Once again, they are hoping you don’t look up the actual report, which they did not link to.

Think Progress lied.

The CRS report is explicit regarding those government services that will not be disrupted. Cut and pasted directly from the report:

Essential Services and Personnel

A 1980 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) memorandum defines “essential” government services and “essential” employees as those:

providing for the national security, including the conduct of foreign relations essential to the national security or the safety of life and property;

providing for benefit payments and the performance of contract obligations under no-year or multi-year or other funds remaining available for those purposes;

conducting essential activities to the extent that they protect life and property, including:

medical care of inpatients and emergency outpatient care;

activities essential to ensure continued public health and safety, including safe use of food, drugs, and hazardous materials;

continuance of air traffic control and other transportation safety functions and the protection of transport property;

border and coastal protection and surveillance;

protection of federal lands, buildings, waterways, equipment and other property owned by the United States;

care of prisoners and other persons in the custody of the United States;

law enforcement and criminal investigations;

emergency and disaster assistance;

activities that ensure production of power and maintenance of the power distribution system;

activities essential to the preservation of the essential elements of the money and banking system of the United States, including borrowing and tax collection activities of the Treasury; and

activities necessary to maintain protection of research property.

Let me be absolutely clear here. There will be no disruption in Social Security, welfare, civil service retirement, or any other kind of open-ended mandatory program payments. The mail will not stop because the Post Office is largely self-funding (with you know, those stamps you buy to mail things with). Air traffic controllers will not go on furlough, jets will keep flying, the Border Patrol will keep on attempting to secure the border that Janet Napolitano wants unsecured, and our military will stay in the fight, however poorly and treasonously led by the current Commander-in-Chief.

Will there be adverse effects? Absolutely. We are talking about a government shutdown. But they are not the dire consequences Democrats are hyping. The only people who will really notice the government shutdown are government workers themselves, and most importantly, Congressional Democrats.

Boo hoo!

Notice that the CRS Report link is directly from the Democrats’ House Rules Committee website. So the Democrats know all this, but they blatantly lie about it. They have an advantage in doing this because the media relentlessly echoes their message.

The Republicans’ job from here on in is to point out the facts. Every Republican in Congress should be pounding out this message. In 1995, they utterly failed at this, when Newt Gingrich reportedly made it all about him, suggesting he threatened a shutdown because Bill Clinton dissed him on Air Force One. Forget Newt for President.

Republicans also must pound the airwaves with reminders that a government shutdown would be due entirely to Democrat intransigence. Republicans are merely trying to keep their pledge to the American people, who in November of 2010 sent an unmistakable message to the Democrats: knock it off!

One possibility remains. Given his penchant for defying law and the Constitution through regulatory subterfuge, President Obama could possibly change the ground rules and crank up the pressure by actually ordering the Social Security Administration to stop sending checks. Once again, it will be incumbent on Republicans to explain that Democrats are choosing to do this.

This is a critical juncture in our Nation’s history. Republicans must demonstrate some intestinal fortitude for a change. A few days ago, I posted an article demanding that Speaker Boehner put up or shut up by allowing amendments to the Continuing Resolution that would defund Obamacare. Given that the bill passed the House with such provisions, it appears he decided to put up.

Speaker Boehner and House Republicans, you have the voters on your side, you have the facts on your side, and never in our history has it been more important for you to take a principled stand. Do not back down in the face of the Democrats’ government shutdown threats. We don’t want that, but if Democrats insist on continuing to trash our country, I say, “bring it on!”

Union and Democrats leaders are bullies. Always have been always will be. When in power they are not afraid to ram legislation down the throats of those who do not want said legislation, just think Obamacare. However, when the tables are turned and they do not have the political strength to stop what they do not like, they resort to tactics that are reminiscent of a three year old child, throwing public tantrums until they get their way.

Of all places, I never expected Wisconsin to be the start of the end for Democrats, but as one who has been looking, hoping and wishing for the end to begin, Wisconsin is as good a place as any. Why do I think this is the beginning of the end of Democrats? Because once and for all, I think honest, hard working people will compare the tactics of the Unions and the Democratic party with the protests held by the Tea Party groups over the past two years and they’ll finally begin to see the mask come off the left.

Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature understand that expenditures cannot continue at current levels. They understand that economic realities force hard choices and so far, I’m proud to say, they’ve stepped up to the challenge and attempted to make a difference. Unhappy Democrats (mainly because they cannot control the political process in Wisconsin right now), took their ball and ran away. My first opinion of these so-called “statesmen” was that they were cowards running away from their duty. Since then, after watching the way they have ginned up the protesters and even the President sided once again with Union Thugs, it has become clear to me that we are dealing not with cowards, but bullies.

Bullies push people around, bullies are willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want, and bullies puff themselves up to scare their opponents into backing down. But I have a message for Republicans in Wisconsin: Bullies are easy to beat: Hit them square in the nose and they run home crying to their mommies.

I speak from personal experience. I was the victim of a bully when I was a child. I took many beatings from my bully. I quietly accepted his harsh and stinging comments. I was kicked, pushed, hit and yes even my lunch money was stolen. Until the day I made the decision not to take it anymore. On that day, I found the strength within myself to fight back. During a particularly bad beating from my bully, I got angry and I decided that enough was enough. I threw a huge right and connected squarely with his face. He was so stunned that he just stood there and looked at me for a few seconds and during those few seconds both of us experienced earthquakes in our worldviews. With the rage inside me unlocked, I began pounding him with everything I had and he began backing up. Suddenly, he wasn’t so tough after all.

After what seemed like an eternity I felt large hands pulling me off my bully who was lying on the ground covering his face and crying. I looked up to see my bully’s father, who then grabbed by bully up by the scruff of his neck and dragged my bully back to his house for what I think was the worst spanking of his life. Not only did my bully lose the fight, he lost his dignity, he lost his prestige in the neighborhood and best of all he lost his power over everyone he had controlled up to that point.

In Wisconsin, it is now time for the Governor to make a bold move. He is receiving death threats and is watching the problem escalate as the President and even Jesse Jackson weigh in. It’s time to become a real statesman. It’s time to act like Ronald Reagan would act.

Fire the protesting teachers.

Fire any teacher who is protesting at the Capitol immediately. Fire any teacher who calls in sick without an excuse from a doctor and expel them from the schools where they work. Or, at least suspend them.

The Governor has cause. The teachers are not showing up for work and they are not doing their job. I would also surmise that the vast majority of people protesting at the Capitol are not teachers anyway, but rather union thugs brought in to “stage” this protest anyway. Teachers who do not understand economic reality and so are throwing this temper tantrum shouldn’t be teaching anyway. You simply cannot split nothing and get something. If they don’t know that fact of life then are they really smart enough to be teaching our kids?

Gov, Chris Christie took on the teachers and the teacher’s unions in New Jersey and is winning the fight. It’s now time for Gov. Scott Walker to take up the fight and find his inner “Reagan”. Reagan fired the air traffic controllers and he survived and even thrived. The public is looking for solutions and for men and women who are willing to stand up and do the right thing.

Fire the teachers. Fire them now.

The Governor has the power to re-hire them later, but he needs to get their attention. Just like a teacher who punishes a child for acting up in class, it’s time for the Governor to suspend these rowdy bullies and send them home for a few days without pay to “think about their actions.”
